I consider myself lucky to do work that I love. Over time, I have developed some special areas of focus from interests of my own continued curiosity and learning.

Single Parenting

... is NOT for the faint of heart! Yet, it doesn't have to be damaging for the kids, nor for the mom or dad. New relationships are possible. Let's explore your options, if you find yourself parenting alone.

Kids need moms and dads to take care of their own emotional and mental needs so that they have the best chance to be free from guilt and shame.

pastoral counseling

Faith languages are important. At best, faith helps us overcome our tendencies to self-protect or self-select to communicate only with people like us.

I have a particular interest in helping dialogues occur, however difficult they may be. People have different experiences, values, and cultural perspectives. It is always good to learn to listen and, when speaking, promote dignity and respect across lines that have, superficially, been drawn in the sand.

Working through trauma

Emotional wounds often take a mental and physical toll. Moreover--as brilliant as many PTSD symptoms can be--new strategies can help ease you in ways that are more healthy, shifting beyond more hard-wiring repetition compulsions. It's tricky to retell past traumas, to root out connections you've made to protect yourself; but, staying safe, we can work with triggers and insights, interpreting unconscious connections, shedding light on new directions. At your own pace.

Other Areas of focus and specialization include:

  • Pre-marital counseling, working with couples to talk frankly about: finances, family legacies, parenting and family planning, celebrating sacred time and space, how to fight fairly and communicate more clearly, and the importance of sexual intimacy.

  • Discernment counseling for couples trying to decide whether to rekindle their connection or end their relationship with dignity and grace.

  • Dating and the "dramas" associated with trying to find a new relationship that may involve blending families.

  • Creativity challenges that artists and writers and musicians face, overcoming blocks and habits of procrastination or brooding.

  • Dissertation completion and the anxieties of academic performance or job market stresses and strains.

  • Neuro-diverse Related Issues with individuals, couples, or families. My work privileges the neuro-diverse person as being gifted in their own right, differently wired, still struggling to connect or to communicate.

My work with Dr. Sexton has resulted in emotional growth and vocational clarity. She has provided the space and tools to create my own narrative which has pointed to a deeper love for myself and healthier relationships with others.
